About Fresh Apples:
Doc Rolland (vocals, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, bass) celebrates over 50 years as a professional performer and fiddle teacher. Some folks accuse him of being a master fiddler because of his in-depth knowledge of the subject, to which Doc simply retorts “Yeee-Haw!!” Nine international tours and several hundred fiddling-trainees make it hard for Doc to escape being called an Arizona fiddle legend. He’s a 3-time Certified Division National Fiddle Champion and an Arizona State Fiddle Champion, and for years he ran Rolland Fiddle Camp in Colorado.
Doc started his music career in the ‘70s in Tucson as part of Summer Dog and subsequently The Slim Joe Pete & Arnie Show and later, the Cowboy Legends. Several years and bands later, you’ll see him perform in Arizona with Pioneer Pepper and The Sunset Pioneers, Crossbow Celtic Ensemble, Payson’s Incidental Bluegrass and The Mountain View Fiddlers. In 2014 he took the Americana String Ensemble, a 9-piece band with 2 dancers, on a memorable 34-day, 24-concert tour of major civic venues around China, which has been memorialized on YouTube and Vimeo.
Meryl Brown (vocals, guitar, bass) previously performed as a soloist and in various duos and also played for the popular northern Colorado country dance band “Snowy River Band” as a vocalist and bassist. After taking a break to raise her family, she’s back in full swing, pursuing her musical passions with FRESH APPLES.
Meryl adds powerful vocals that are a highlight of the FRESH APPLES sound. With her roots in country and folk with a little bit of old rock and blues, she can belt it out or soften it up. She offers some free-spirit twists on FRESH APPLES’ song arrangements. Meryl is an avid songwriter as well, and before she set music aside to raise her family, she recorded an album of original songs, which is now available on CD. She is enjoying putting the FRESH APPLES stamp on her originals.
